Fix postfix sasl fatal error

I recently ran into a situation in where my Postfix MTA was not able to relay messages to the external SMTP host of my ISP. I’m running Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS. When sorting out my syslog i ran into the following error:

Jun 27 10:28:13 cs1 postfix/smtp[5746]: fatal: open database /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.db: No such file or directory

The error was caused by the ‘smtp_sasl_auth_enable’ option in my /etc/postfix/ config file .

To quickly solve the error, remark the following lines in your /etc/postfix/ file:

#smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
#smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
#smtp_sasl_security_options =
A restart of your MTA is required using ‘/etc/init.d/postfix restart

That’s it! Happy mailing!
